University of Michigan
Ross School of Business Interview

What companies recruit at Ross?

All the major companies from around the world come to Ross. I think there is a misconception that because we are in Ann Arbor, the big name companies in major industries that MBA grads pursue don't come here. But that's just not the case.

Consulting firms such as McKinsey, Bain, BCG, etcetera, recruit at Ross. In investment banking, Goldman Sachs, Lehman Brothers, J.P. Morgan, Deutsche Bank, etcetera, recruit at Ross.

Kraft, Target, P&G, and General Mills recruit here for brand management. We also have grads who are hired by high-tech companies such as Amazon, Dell, Intel, IBM, and Yahoo!

We have a fair number of grads going into nonprofits or start-ups as well.

How was the recruiting season last year?

It was very successful. Over 90 per cent of our graduates received offers within three months of graduation. Some of the most popular cities that they went to were Chicago, New York, Boston, San Francisco, and L.A.

Again, I think there's a misconception that people stay around the Midwest, and that's just not the case. Our graduates go all over the country and the world.

How was the 2005-2006 admissions season for the Ross School of Business?

It has been a great year for us. Applications were up. Our average GMAT score went up. It looks like our incoming class will have an average GMAT score of 702.

The diversity is still strong. In fact, the percentage of women in our incoming classes has increased to 34 per cent from 30 per cent last year. We maintained diversity in terms of our under-represented minority and international students.

We are very pleased with the strength of the incoming class.

Are there any particular programs that are targeted towards specific population groups, like women or minorities?

We have a women's initiative that is dedicated to programming for our women students and alumnae. We host workshops focused on the issues women face in their careers. We provide one-on-one counseling. We have mentoring between current students and alumnae. We host conferences focused on women's leadership and provide networking and coaching opportunities.

For our under-represented minorities, we are a part of the Consortium which seeks to increase the representation of under-represented minorities in business. Being a Consortium school, we offer scholarships to students who are a part of the Consortium. We host an event called "Upclose" for prospective under-represented minority students.

We also have student clubs. We've got the Michigan Business Women's Club, the Black Business Students Association, the Hispanic and Latin Business Students Association, and Out for Business.

What are Ross students like?

They are down-to-earth, team-oriented, collaborative, and they take a lot of initiative.

I have been amazed at how many things students get involved in and how much they want to take part in the whole MBA experience – from joining clubs, to volunteering to coordinate events, to creating new classes and clubs, to getting involved with the Admissions Committee and with career counseling.

I see very few students not getting involved in something. They are not just about studying. They are a very well-rounded and dedicated student body.
